Sick, Sad, and Exhausted

Lesedauer < 1 Minute

Donald Trump has made it clear that global health and collaborative efforts to combat the escalating climate crisis are no longer priorities. His audience cheers loudly in approval. Meanwhile, U.S. companies—from big banks to tech giants—fall in line, abandoning green initiatives, DEI programs, and measures designed to protect minorities. Last time they pushed back, I guess this time they changed their minds.

The New York Times recently published a survey showing that a majority of Americans now support Trump’s positions. In the same issue, there’s a full-page ad from an Australian billionaire congratulating Trump and expressing eagerness to work with him to bring more jobs to the U.S.

And then there’s Elon Musk. He raises his arm in a gesture that especially Germans, but also many others, instantly associate with a Nazi salute. Whether it was intentional or not, the effect is the same. Arguments about intent miss the point: the signal is deliberate, and the uproar it causes is not a glitch but a calculated feature. Musk knows exactly what he’s doing—pushing the boundaries of what society deems acceptable conduct.

Jon Stewart once said: “If you don’t stick to your values when they’re tested, then they’re not values: they’re hobbies.”

Watching all of this unfold leaves me feeling sick, sad, and exhausted. And this is all just getting started, we’ll all face our tests before it will be over.
